With Memorial Day weekend approaching, Colorado State Parks officials have announced that multiple campsites remain available.

These include Steamboat Lake, Bonny Lake, Elevenmile, John Martin, Mancos and Vega. Sites, along with opportunities for whitewater rafting, also remain at Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area and Yampa River park.

Waterton closure.

Routine maintenance by Denver Water crews will cause Waterton Canyon to be closed to public access from 8 p.m. Tuesday until 7 a.m. Friday.

Neither the parking lot at the entrance nor any part of the canyon will be accessible.

Women’s deadline.

The Colorado Women’s Flyfishers have established Wednesday as the registration deadline for the Women’s Flyfishing Weekend at the Kassler Center near Waterton Canyon.

Those who choose to participate in the two-day introductory classes May 30 and 31 should e-mail coloradowomenflyfishers@gmail.com for information and applications.

Snake alert.

Nickel Creek Gun Dogs will conduct another Snake Avoidance and Training Clinic to help dog owners involve encounters with poisonous snakes.

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m., May 30 at Kiowa Creek Gun Club, 46700 E. Quincy Ave., Bennett. Cost is $40 per dog and part of the fee is donated to Pheasants Forever. For sign-up, 303-840-1839.

Mussels found.

Inspectors at Cherry Creek State Park on May 10 detected mussels on a 34-foot motorboat. The aquatic nuisance species were removed from a vessel purchased at auction in Arizona last year.

The boat was decontaminated through the use of 480 gallons of water heated to 140 degrees.

The procedure required 4 1/2 hours.
