GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 19 in the case of a Longmont man charged in the 1975 stabbing deaths of a Grand Junction mother and her daughter.
District Judge Brian Flynn scheduled the hearing Wednesday.
Attorney Steve Colvin, representing 64-year-old Jerry Nemnich, says the extra three months are needed to dig through “voluminous” amounts of police reports—many handwritten in the 1970s.
Nemnich is charged with first-degree murder, felony murder and burglary in the July 1975 deaths of 24-year-old Linda Benson and her 5-year-old daughter, Kelley.
Police say they linked Nemnich to the murders through DNA evidence. His arrest affidavit remains sealed.
Nemnich is being held at the Mesa County Jail on $3 million bond.
