The St. Vrain Valley School Board and its teachers union are at an impasse over a new contract, as the district offered a 9.1 percent raise in pay and benefits but employees countered with a bid for 14.57 percent Thursday.

The St. Vrain Valley Education Association rejected the district’s offer Thursday. A mediator is expected to preside over future negotiations later this summer.

The board’s offer would cost about $6.2 million for increases in base pay and step raises, as well as greater contributions to medical and dental insurance.

The association’s counterproposal would cost more than $9.9 million, according to the district.

The biggest differences are in base pay increases — with the school board proposing a 2.37 percent raise, and the teachers union asking for 6 percent.

The board is offering a partial restoration of a step increase teachers did not receive in 2002 because of a budget crisis. The board’s offer is worth $184,000. Teachers want full restoration, worth $1.2 million.
