BOULDER, Colo.—A woman accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian on the side of a Lafayette highway has pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide.

Sixty-two-year-old Mary Jo Thomas pleaded guilty Friday under a plea agreement.

Prosecutors recommended that she receive probation in the Jan. 30 death of 57-year-old John Breaux of Louisville (LOO’-iss-vil).

Sentencing before Boulder District Judge James Klein is set for July 10.

Thomas declined to comment after the hearing. Her attorney has said she suffers from a mental defect that hinders her ability to fully grasp what’s happening around her.

Breaux was walking along the side of U.S. 287 when a vehicle veered off the road and hit him. He was well-known in eastern Boulder County for riding around on his bike and picking up trash on the streets.
