HOUSTON — The number of oil and natural-gas rigs operating in the U.S. fell to the lowest since February 2003 this week, according to data published by Baker Hughes Inc.

Rigs exploring for or producing oil or gas declined by 18, or 2 percent, to 900, Baker Hughes said Friday. The rig count has fallen 55 percent from 1,992 in 2003.
