Pools and water parks in Boulder scrambled over the winter to install special drains to comply with a new federal law intended to make them safer for swimmers.

Boulder officials say the drains at its municipal pools posed no risk, and custom-ordering and installing the special drain gates costs between $7,000 and $9,000.

City officials are in the process of outfitting the five municipal pools with the new drains, said Paul Bousquet, spokesman for the parks and recreation department.

Recreation officials had to custom order the new drains, and there was a national shortage of the parts, Bousquet said.
