Two men in their 30s were injured this afternoon near a Weld County home when a lightning bolt struck the shotgun of a man as he aimed at a flying target.

The man holding the gun is in serious condition. A man who had been standing next to him during the 2:12 p.m. lightning strike also was injured, according to Weld County Undersheriff Margie Martinez.

Both men were taken to North Colorado Medical Center, Martinez said. Their names were not immediately available.

Three people were near the home — at 21000 Colorado 392, between county roads 43 and 45 — northeast of Greeley, she said.

Thunder clouds were not directly overhead when the lightning struck, Martinez said. The range of lightning can be deceiving, she added.

“They had just launched a skeet when lightning struck one of them,” Martinez said.

The third man was not injured by the lightning, Martinez said.
