Happy Birthday, Dashiell Hammett.

Born May 27, 1894, Dashiell Hammett was called “the dean of hardboiled detective novels” and ruled the dime-book world in the ’20s and ’30s, with classic characters like Sam Spade (“The Maltese Falcon”) and Nick and Nora Charles (“The Thin Man” series) — none of whom were ever more than a heartbeat away from another cocktail. Hammett died in 1961.

In the 1934 film adaptation of “The Thin Man,” Nick Charles (William Powell, above) delivered this timeless cocktail-mixing advice to Nora (Myrna Loy): “The important thing is the rhythm. Always have rhythm in your shaking. Now a Manhattan you shake to fox-trot time, a Bronx to two-step time, a dry martini you always shake to waltz time.”
