BOULDER, Colo.—A former Lafayette police officer accused of stalking his ex-girlfriend and writing her boyfriend an unjustified traffic ticket was sentenced to five years probation.

James Edward Stafford pleaded guilty to misdemeanor criminal mischief and official misconduct in exchange for having felony charges dismissed. The 34-year-old was also ordered Tuesday not to have contact with his ex-girlfriend.

Stafford was accused of sending his ex text messages indicating he was watching her at a restaurant where she worked and telling her boss to fire her, alleging that she was stealing money.

The ticket Stafford wrote to his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend for allegedly weaving was later dismissed.

Stafford resigned from his job in March.
