Four people died in three crashes on state highways during the holiday weekend, the lowest total in a decade, the Colorado State Patrol said today.

None of the fatalities were alcohol-related, the first time the Memorial Day weekend has gone without a drunken-driving death since 2003, according to the highway patrol.

For the fifth year in row there were no deaths on any of the state roads targeted by troopers’ “Colorado Target Zero” Memorial Day weekend safety campaign

Troopers made 230 arrests on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

After pulling over or assisting 24,132 vehicles, highway patrol officers wrote 8,583 traffic citations, including 2,251 citations for failure to wear seatbelts.

Troopers made 61 felony arrests, recovered nine stolen vehicles and filed 103 drug-related charges, according to the State Patrol.

The agency said there were 743 troopers and 140 communications officers on duty during the holiday weekend.

Sunday evening Steven Green, 47, of Pueblo and Robert Green, 46, of Canon City were killed Sunday evening when their Nissan Titan went out of control and rolled off Colorado Highway 96 about 14 miles east of Westcliffe.

Sunday afternoon Allen Brunsvold, 43, of Bennett was killed when a pickup turned in front of his motorcycle at East Colfax Avenue and North Dunkirk Street.

The truck driver, Cesario Garcia, 47, of Edgewater was arrested and charged with careless driving resulting in death.

Saturday morning Burl C. Jensen, 71, of Lone Tree was killed on C-470 early when he drove his pickup into a bridge abutment beneath Colorado Boulevard.
