Kevin Forrest scored on a header in the 62nd minute to give the Seattle Sounders a 1-0 win over the visiting Rapids on Tuesday in a U.S. Open Cup play-in match.

The Sounders earned a spot in the 40-team Open Cup bracket. They will not play until the third round, which is scheduled for June 30. The Rapids were denied an Open Cup berth for the second straight year.

Laird in British Open.

Former Colorado State golfer Martin Laird was one of eight players to make the British Open field during qualifying Monday at Glen- eagles Country Club in Plano, Texas, with a 36-hole, 10-under-par 132. It will be the first professional event in his native Scotland for Laird, who plays on the PGA Tour. This year’s tournament is July 16-19 at Turnberry, 45 minutes from Laird’s hometown of Glasgow.

Other qualifiers included medalist Matt Kuchar (13-under 129) and Davis Love III, who will make his 23rd consecutive start at the British Open.

USOC honors Bennett.

Former national freestyle development wrestling coach Dave Bennett of Coaldale was among five recipients of a coach of the year award from the U.S. Olympic Committee. Bennett received the “Doc” Counsilman Award, which recognizes a coach who “utilizes scientific techniques and equipment” as part of his or her coaching methods.
