Greeley’s Kelly Schaub began and finished Wednesday’s first round of the Colorado Women’s Open with birdies, paving the way for her 2-under-par 70 at Green Valley Ranch.
Former University of Denver star Schaub heads into today’s middle round tied for second with low amateur Becca Huffer of Denver and Kendall Dye of Edmond, Okla., two shots behind the leader, Sara Brown of Tucson.
“I played pretty good today. Started with a birdie and chipped in (on 18) with another one,” Schaub said. “It was a good way to finish. I had fun out there and just enjoyed golf for once this year. I’ve struggled lately.”
Schaub, 29, was the 1997 Colorado Women’s Golf Association junior stroke play champion and three-time CWGA player of the year (2003, 2005, 2006). She joined the Futures circuit in 2003 and has a career-best finish of 37th.
Schaub and the other pros are competing for $55,000 in prize money, with $11,000 going to the winner. There is $18,000 in pro-am cash, and amateurs are playing for a $750 merchandise certificate.
Three past champions are in the field, including two-time defender Walailak Satarak, who shot an 8-over 80.
Loveland’s Bethany Buchner, the Class 5A prep state champion, shot a 4-over 76 at the 6,325-yard course.
