Making his first start since Monday because of a strained groin, Brad Hawpe planted Josh Geer’s 0-2 pitch into the right-field seats for a two-run homer in the first inning. Hawpe’s seventh homer came with two outs, making him 10-for-18 (.556) with two outs and runners in scoring position. That’s the best clutch hitting in the majors.
Fogg-y night.
Josh Fogg got his most extensive work since getting called up from Triple-A. The right-hander threw 2 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Vinny 99.
Vinny Castilla coached first base, filling in for Glenallen Hill, who was attending his daughter’s high school graduation. Castilla wears No. 9 when he practices with the team, but he added another digit because Ian Stewart officially wears No. 9.
