Infrared photography turns conventional scenes into something surreal, transforming green into frostbitten silver or lilac, and rendering blue skies into the graded hues of sandstone.

By nature, infrared photography reveals a dreamy (and sometimes nightmarish) part of the light spectrum that humans normally never see.

For these pictures, Denver Post photographer RJ Sangosti looked for places where the natural and urban environments collide. Among his urbanscapes: a chain-link fence defining Lakeside Amusement Park’s boundary; a desolate road; refugee living-room furnishings; and a solitary reminder of unincorporated Arvada’s mining history.
