Safeway and grocery employees agreed Thursday to extend their work contract until June 26.

The decision came after an all-day negotiation between United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 7, representing about 17,000 workers, and the supermarket management.

The company and union are trying to sort through disagreements on wages and benefits to achieve a long- term agreement.

King Soopers and Safeway have been seeking potential temporary workers, in case of a strike or lockout. King Soopers union employees have been working without an agreement since a contract extension expired Sunday.
