“Ask Arthur Frommer: And Travel Better, Cheaper, Smarter” ($19.99, Frommer’s Book/Wiley) comes along just as travelers think about where they’re headed this summer that won’t cost much. The undisputed king of cheaper travelin 1957 he published “Europe on $5 a Day,” and we’ve been looking for his guidance since — hits upon all of the major modes of transportation, including cruising, RV rentals, rental cars and, of course, flying, and offers savvy tips on how to cut costs without sacrificing comfort or convenience. For instance, you often can find the best cruise rates from, weirdly, Southwest Airlines, on their website under “Cruise Specials. He also devotes a large section to cheap ideas in a few of his favorite places, including London, several spots in Mexico and a few major U.S. cities.
