More than a half-dozen Arvada police officers — and Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies along with a K-9 unit — responded to Risen Christ Lutheran Church after someone reported seeing a man with a rifle outside the building.

The man, who works at the church, had an air rifle and was trying to get rid of a bird that had made itself at home in the church, said Arvada police spokeswoman Susan Medina.

“There was a bird, I don’t know what kind, who had made holes in the structure and was living inside the church,” she said.

Medina didn’t identify the man, who didn’t fire the gun and committed no crime. “He was trying to think of a way to get the bird away from the church,” she said.

A motorist driving by the church at 14850 W. 72nd Ave. spotted the man and called 911 at 9:43 a.m.

“Any time we get a call of that nature, it is very, very serious,” Medina said. Tom McGhee, The Denver Post
