University of Colorado senior Jenny Barringer set another collegiate record but fell just short of victory Sunday in a wild finish in the 1,500 meters at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore.
Barringer set an NCAA record in 3 minutes, 59.90 seconds. But she lost by 0.01 of a second to Ethiopia’s Gelete Burka, who won in 3:59.89.
It was Barringer’s sixth NCAA record this season and broke the previous mark of 4:06.19 set by Florida State’s Hannah England in 2008.
It also was the fastest time by an American woman this year and the third-fastest in the world. Burka has the two best times.
Casey set to join Team USA.
Rapids forward Conor Casey was named to the U.S. national team’s 23-man roster for the FIFA Confederations Cup, Team USA coach Bob Bradley said.
The tournament in South Africa is June 14-28. The Rapids have three Major League Soccer games scheduled during that stretch, against D.C. United, FC Dallas and Seattle.
