FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A Loveland man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the beating death of another man who had just given him divorce papers, plus 48 years for attacking his own children.
James Whitler was convicted last month on charges including first-degree murder and child abuse in the 2008 attack.
Prosecutors say Whitler killed 57-year-old Stephen Allen with a baseball bat, choked his children into unconsciousness and stabbed one of the children before sheriff’s deputies pulled him away.
Judge Dan Kaup said in court Monday the sentence takes into account the seriousness of the attack on the children.
