The Rockies promoted Carlos Gonzalez because of his bat. But his initial impact has come from his glove. After making two over-the-shoulder catches in center field Saturday, Gonzalez snared an Albert Pujols flyball in the first inning while slamming into the left-field wall. It turned a double into a two-run-scoring sacrifice fly. After the out, pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez retired the next 16 batters.
“I felt my body hitting into everything,” said Gonzalez, playing left field for the first time since spring training. “It turned out to be an important play.”
Still stewing.
Ian Stewart is 7-for-13 in the series with nine RBIs.
RISP in peace.
The Cardinals have just six hits in their last 50 at-bats with runners in scoring position.
