Gov. Bill Ritter announced today that Don Elliman, director of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade, will become the state’s first chief operating officer.

In his new role, Elliman will oversee all state agencies that use funds from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, the federal economic-stimulus package.

His $146,000 annual salary will not change.

In a press release from the governor’s office, Elliman said he hopes his new position will allow him to improve the state’s economy.

“In partnership with the citizens, businesses and communities of Colorado, state government will help lead Colorado toward a strong recovery,” he said.

Elliman has been the director of the Office of Economic Development since March 2007. He also spent 32 years working for Time Inc., including serving as publisher of People magazine and president and publisher of Sports Illustrated.
