Greeley’s Cassandra Mendoza advanced through the first round of the USA Boxing National Championships at the Denver Coliseum on Tuesday, winning a decision in the 112-pound women’s open division.
Mendoza defeated Amy Sowers of Bozeman, Mont., 19-11 to advance.
Also in the afternoon session, Donovan Dennis of Davenport, Iowa, defeated Denver’s Gildardo Garcia by a 34-6 decision in the 141-pound men’s open division.
Nuggets have surgery.
Nuggets’ guard Dahntay Jones underwent arthroscopic surgery Monday on his right shoulder to remove a bone spur. He’s expected to make a full recovery in four to six weeks.
Also Monday, coach George Karl had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.
Seven birdies worth Aspen lead.
Greeley golfer David Oraee shot a 6-under-par 66 in the first round of the AJGA Junior All-Star in Aspen and led the boys division by four strokes.
Oraee birdied seven holes on the 6,706-yard Aspen Golf Club course. Cameron Harrell of Colorado Springs was second after shooting a 2-under 70.
In the girls division, Littleton’s Shannon Lubar was atop the first-round leaderboard after shooting a 1- over 73.
She led Xin Wang (74) of Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla., and Allie Johnston (76) of Castle Rock.
