CORTEZ — A second psychiatric evaluation has concluded a Colorado man accused of killing his father and feeding body parts to coyotes is competent to stand trial.

Investigators say 21-year-old Jeremiah Raymond Berry killed his father outside Cortez in 2008 and then beheaded and dismembered the corpse.

Berry is charged with second-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. An earlier evaluation also found him competent.

Court records say Berry claims his father, Jack Berry, raped him after telling the son he needed a sex change to become his wife.

If convicted, Berry faces eight to 48 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million. He’s being held on $500,000 bond.
