TORONTO — Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay won’t pitch again until at least Saturday because of a mild groin strain.
Halladay (10-1), who leads the majors in wins and innings (103), left Friday night’s game against Florida two pitches into the fourth. He tried one warm-up pitch before walking off the field, the first time in 14 starts this season that he hasn’t gone at least seven innings.
The Blue Jays will shuffle their rotation to give Halladay extra rest before his next start, bypassing him on his regular day Thursday at Philadelphia and holding him back until Saturday at Washington.
“He’d have to convince me he’s OK,” Toronto manager Cito Gaston said.
Peavy put on DL.
Jake Peavy was placed on the 15-day disabled list by San Diego, a day after learning he would be sidelined at least a month because of a strained tendon behind his right ankle.
The move is retroactive to June 9, a day after the 2007 NL Cy Young winner gave up three runs over seven innings and struck out eight in a 6-3 victory against Arizona. He was scheduled to pitch Saturday night against the Los Angeles Angels.
Peavy is 3-1 with a 4.43 ERA in four starts since he voided a trade to the Chicago White Sox. The 28-year-old right-hander’s injury occurred while he ran the bases in his first start after the proposed trade.
Footnotes.
The Houston Astros have activated closer Jose Valverde from the 15-day DL.
• The Cubs activated right-hander Rich Harden from the disabled list to start against the Minnesota Twins.
• Twins outfielder Michael Cuddyer sat out Saturday’s game against the Cubs with an inflamed right index finger.
• Tampa Bay reliever Jason Isringhausen left Saturday’s game against Washington with pain in his surgically repaired right elbow.
