One-inch hail pounded Longmont from a thunderstorm that swept 16 Colorado counties under a tornado watch that will not expire until 10 p.m.
At 8:47 p.m. the National Weather Service detected a severe thunderstorm 11 miles south of Briggsdale, or 20 miles east of Greeley.
A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for the area until 9:15 p.m.
Half-dollar-sized hail has been reported, forecasters said.
The storm is moving northeast at 25 mph, according to the Weather Service.
The thunderstorm is capable of producing tornadoes, large hail, wind of more than 58 mph, lightning and heavy rain, according to forecasters.
A tornado watch has been posted for all of northeastern Colorado, including Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Elbert, Jefferson, Kit Carson, Larimer, Lincoln, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Washington and Weld.
The watch also includes portions of Wyoming, Kansas and Nebraska.
Earlier forcasters warned that weather on the plains could produce “supercell” thunderstorms.
The metro region has a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon, as well. The high tomorrow is expected to reach 81.
Forecasters predict Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be drier with highs in 80s each day.
