A suicidal Denver man who was holed up in his home surrendered to SWAT officers this afternoon after negotiating with a patrol officer.

The man, who was not named by police, was taken from the home in the 300 block of South Raleigh Street, just south of Alameda Avenue, at about 4 p.m. after making threats against officers by telephone.

He did not appear to be injured but was taken away in an ambulance.

“He gave up,” said police spokesman Sonny Jackson. “A patrol officer was able to talk him out before negotiators got there.”

Jackson was not sure whether the man would be charged.

The man might have had an antique gun in his home, but he did not confront officers with it, Jackson said.

Police barricades kept residents at bay and detoured traffic in the area for about an hour.

Dozens of neighborhood residents stood at the police tape one to two blocks from the home as police tried to coax the man to surrender and walk out of the house.

Ice cream carts waited at two locations.

“It’s a pretty exciting neighborhood,” said Maria Alvardo, 23, who grew up on nearby Perry Street. “The crime isn’t as bad as it’s just people not getting along sometime. There are a lot of kids in this neighborhood. They don’t need to see this stuff and think it’s normal.”
