SALT LAKE CITY—The FBI says a second defendant indicted following an investigation into the theft and illegal trafficking of ancient artifacts from the Four Corners area has been found dead in an apparent suicide.
The agency says New Mexico resident Steven L. Shrader, 56, died Friday morning in Shabbona, Ill. FBI officials say he apparently died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Shrader was one of two dozen people indicted last week following a two-year investigation.
He was scheduled to appear in federal court in Salt Lake City on Friday. He had not yet entered a plea in the case.
The day after the indictments were announced, a prominent southeast Utah doctor named James Redd, 60, committed suicide.
