Denver Nuggets play-by-play radio announcer Jerry Schemmel is going back to college. He will add Colorado State football and basketball broadcasts to his vast resume.

Schemmel succeeds Rich Bircumshaw, who succumbed to a stroke in late April at age 54.

The new CSU play-by-play man has been the voice of the Nuggets since 1992, most recently on Altitude Radio Network. He will continue to work Nuggets home games, except if there is a CSU football conflict. He will also continue with selected Altitude television assignments.

CSU’s new announcer was the baseball head coach at Metro State last season after two years as an assistant, deputy commissioner of the Continental Basketball Association and author of a book based on surviving the 1989 plane crash in Sioux City, Iowa.

His new job will create a few interesting family reunions in Mountain West play. His brother, Jeff Schemmel, is San Diego State’s athletic director.

Jerry Schemmel also will host mid-week in-season coaches shows.
