DENVER—An elderly woman is recovering in a Denver hospital after nearly drowning in the South Platte River.

Rescuers say they don’t know why the woman using a walker was in the river on Saturday afternoon. Fire crews say she was walking against a strong current in chest-deep water when her foot got caught under a rock.

The woman went under and was submerged about 10 minutes before rescuers revived her.

A Denver Police spokesman said the woman was alive, but was unable to provide her condition.
