WASHINGTON — A federal judge has ordered a detainee at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility to be released, saying the man was a captive of the Taliban, not a follower.
U.S. District Judge Richard Leon disagreed with the government’s claims against Abd Al Rahim Abdul Rassak. Leon said the Syrian spent 18 months in a Taliban prison after being tortured by al-Qaeda. Prosecutors had argued that Rassak had a relationship with al-Qaeda that was still in effect even after it had abused and imprisoned him.
