The Church turned the Gothic Theatre into their temple on Thursday. Photos by .
Australian art-rockers had moments both brilliant and boring in their set on Thursday night at the . The strongest elements of the set were guitar rockers led by multi-instrumentalist and Rickenbacker aficionado Marty Willson-Piper. Lead singer Steve Kilbey bantered with the Gothic crowd and crooned Church classics like “Under the Milky Way” and “Reptile.”
Newer Church songs from their recent album, Untitled #23, held less appeal and tended to wander in drowsy, jazz-jam territory. Overall, though, the set had enough jangly guitars and poetic lyricism to leave their audience satisfied. —
