Even Todd Helton couldn’t escape clean from Wednesday night’s oil spill. The Rockies first baseman committed his second error of the season and first since May 9, mishandling a groundball by Erick Aybar in the fourth inning. Manager Jim Tracy admitted it’s hard to rest Helton unless absolutely necessary because of the veteran’s outstanding defense.

Garrett Atkins, trying to enhance his trade value, singled in his first at-bat as the Rockies’ designated hitter Wednesday.
