FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Colorado State has called off this year’s Great Sofa Roundup because of bedbug fears.
For the past nine years the university and the city of Fort Collins have set up two days where people can swap old couches. The college town started the swap to prevent people from leaving furniture in alleys and sidewalks. Last year about 600 couches changed hands.
But this summer’s Sofa Roundup has been canceled because officials fear it could spread bedbugs.
Bedbugs are small insects that feed on human blood leaving behind bothersome skin welts. They can be passed unknowingly through upholsetered furniture.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment says it has no bedbug reports this year. Fort Collins officials say the Roundup was canceled as a precaution and that it my be revived.
