Five young men have filed excessive- use-of-force lawsuits against the Denver Police Department.
“They’re beating individuals long after they’ve been subdued, and that continuous beating is against the law,” said attorney Doug Romero, who is representing the five men.
The men claim they were hit by different Denver officers within the past year. Pictures taken immediately after their arrests show cuts on some of the men’s faces. They have blackened eyes and bloody mouths with chipped teeth.
Romero is filing suits on behalf of James Watkins, John Crespin, Shawn Johnson, Michael Deherrera and Thomas Allen.
The Denver Police Department says it’s inappropriate to comment on pending litigation. However, spokesman Sonny Jackson sent a statement that said all complaints were and are thoroughly investigated by the Internal Affairs Bureau and the Office of the Independent Monitor. Deborah Sherman, 9News
