An independent review of human-rights issues at Newmont Mining Corp.’s Yanacocha mine in Peru has called for new procedures at the facility.
Among the recommendations are: rigorously investigating human-rights abuses, disclosing contracts with police forces, considering severing ties with a private security contractor, and promoting greater dialogue with local communities.
“We will carefully review the report’s findings and recommendations, and develop an action plan,” said Javier Velarde, regional vice president of legal and corporate affairs of Newmont Peru.
The report is the result of a two-year mediation process between Newmont and human-rights group Oxfam America.
