The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunder storm warning for Elbert and Arapahoe counties until 7 p.m. with the threat of large hail and damaging winds.

“It’s just a regular old thunderstorm,” said Frank Benton, meteorologist for the weather service in Boulder. “We don’t have any reports of severe flooding yet.”

He said the storm moved through the Denver area fairly quickly.

The heavy rains were causing street flooding in Denver.

“Right now, we’re pretty safe, but we’re going to keep an eye on it,” Benton said.

Greg Champlin, Denver Fire Department spokesman, said two cars were stuck at the intersection of Yosemite Street and Eastman Avenue. Tow trucks were called to pull the vehicles out of the water.

“We had 20 calls going at the same time,” he said. “We’re getting a lot of calls that are weather related.”

There were several traffic accidents and alarms triggered by lightening, Champlin said.
