DENVER—Fifteen years ago, Frontier Airlines launched its first flight from Denver.
On Sunday, the airline celebrates its first flight July 5, 1994, with events for employees.
The original Frontier Airlines operated for 40 years before it was sold in 1986. Former executives of that airline and others decided to launch a carrier under the same name after Continental Airlines scaled back its Denver operations in 1993.
Last year Frontier filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after a move by its credit card processor to start withholding significant proceeds from the sale of Frontier tickets threatened a cash crunch, but it kept operating.
Republic Airways has bid $109 million to take the carrier out of bankruptcy.
