STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — About 40 hot-air balloons will take to the sky this weekend during the Bank of the West Hot Air Balloon Rodeo.

This year’s rodeo opens at 6 a.m. today and Sunday at the launch area near Bald Eagle Lake.

Balloons begin inflating at 6:30 a.m. and taking off about 7 a.m.

Once airborne, pilots will attempt to “slash and dash” across the lake, touching the baskets of their balloons to a target in the water. They then fly to River Creek Park, and pilots will compete to see who can toss a beanbag closest to the center of an “X.”

The balloons then fly back to Bald Eagle Lake. Contestants each drop a marker and try to grab one of three small helium balloons.

Each of the small balloons represents a prize.
