A Colorado Springs man died Friday when he fell several hundred feet down Capitol Peak outside of Aspen, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s office.
The man, whose identity won’t been released until his next of kin have been notified, was climbing with another man from Colorado Springs.
Capitol Peak is a very steep, 14,000-foot mountain that requires technical equipment for summiting, according to the sheriff.
Early Friday afternoon, the man fell several hundred feet off the northeast side of the peak at an elevation of about 13,000 feet.
Mountain Rescue Aspen responded to a call for help at 2:45 p.m., as did the Flight For Life Helicopter. The helicopter, carrying rescue personnel, was able to land on the peak some distance from the climber. Rescue personnel took about 30 minutes to reach the man and began administering CPR. They stopped at 6:23 p.m. and pronounced the man dead, the sheriff’s office reported.
The surviving climber has not been identified.
