The driver of an SUV who refused to pull over for a state trooper fired shots at the trooper, who was not hit by the gunfire, authorities say.

The incident happened early this morning in Adams County, according to a media release from the Colorado State Patrol.

The trooper tried to pull over a dark green Chevrolet Blazer at about 12:45 a.m., for a registration violation, near U.S. 85 and East 74th Avenue in Adams County, the patrol said.

The Blazer took off across a grass median and fled north on Brighton Boulevard. Near East 72nd Avenue and Krameria Street, the driver lost control of the Blazer while trying to turn into a private driveway. Shots were fired from the driver’s window at the pursuing trooper, and the SUV crashed into a light pole.

The driver and a passenger in the Blazer fled on foot, the patrol said.

Troopers, Commerce City police officers and Adams County deputies searched for the pair but could not find them. Investigators believe the Blazer was stolen.

The investigation is ongoing.
