The driver of an SUV who refused to pull over for a state trooper early Friday fired shots at the trooper, who was not hit by the gunfire, authorities say.

The trooper tried to pull over a dark-green Chevrolet Blazer for a registration violation about 12:45 a.m. near U.S. 85 and East 74th Avenue in Adams County, the Colorado State Patrol said.

The Blazer took off across a grass median and fled north on Brighton Boulevard. Near East 72nd Avenue and Krameria Street, the driver lost control of the Blazer while trying to turn into a private driveway. Shots were fired from the driver’s window at the pursuing trooper, and the SUV crashed into a light pole. The driver and a passenger in the Blazer fled on foot, the State Patrol said.
