Denver and Commerce City firefighters battled a blaze at a private landfill near Denver International Airport this afternoon.
The fire at the Allied Waste Services Landfill at 8480 Tower Road apparently started in some foam rubber, discards from a car seat manufacturer, said assistant Denver fire chief Steve Garrod.
“It looks to be some kind of accident,” he said. “The place was locked up pretty tight.”
The fire was reported at 2:41 p.m. and was first thought to be a grass fire in the open plains, where the landfill is located. The fire took about an hour to extinguish, Garrod said.
There were no injuries and flight operations at the airport were not affected, officials said.
