Sunday was billed as Mat Latos Day in sunny San Diego as the Padres’ 6-foot-6 right-hander made his major-league debut.
The 21-year-old was impressive in his four innings, but once again the Rockies trumped a rookie. Colorado has won nine consecutive games against rookie starters. Latos allowed three hits and two runs in four innings with one walk and four strikeouts.
Hot Hawpe.
The Padres don’t have much of a prayer vs. Rockies all-star outfielder Brad Hawpe. He went 2-for-4 and clubbed his 15th homer Sunday. He is 16-for-31 (.516) against the Padres this year with two homers and seven RBIs.
Streaking.
Outfielder Seth Smith started his sixth consecutive game and extended his hitting streak to a career- best seven games. He went 2-for-5 on Sunday, boosting his average to .305. He is 11-for-26 (.423) during the streak.
