The warden of the so-called Supermax prison that holds some of the country’s most dangerous inmates is retiring.

Warden Ron Wiley announced his retirement effective Oct. 1, after 28 years of government service, Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Traci Billingsley confirmed Monday.

Inmates at the Supermax in Florence include convicted Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui, “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski and Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols. The prison also has been mentioned as a possible home for Guantanamo Bay detainees. Billingsley did not release reasons for Wiley’s departure.
