So three cops were sitting in a doughnut shop …
Actually, Denver police Detectives Mark Romero and Paul Hogan joined Sgt. Steve Gonzales for a cup of coffee at Haney’s Coffee Shop, owned by Denver police Detective John Haney, at 3814 Lowell Blvd. around 7 a.m. on Thursday to discuss a burglary investigation.
Glancing over his cup, Gonzales noticed a guy walking around a for-sale house across the street, looking into the windows and ringing the doorbell.
Gonzales decided to drive down the alley, just in case.
Behind the house, he saw an Isuzu truck with the driver’s door open.
“So I waved to the detectives across the street to come over,” he said. “Then the guy walked around the garage, hiding something behind his right leg.
“I pulled my gun and ordered him to show me his hands. The guy said to me, ‘You got me. I just broke into the garage.’ ”
The suspect was hiding a large spike and a pry bar behind his leg. The garage door had been pried open, but the building was empty.
Roger Lee Burns, 48, was arrested on suspicion of breaking and entering.
Gonzales left while Romero and Hogan returned to their coffee — and a good laugh with Haney.
