A jury’s award of $3 million against United Airlines in a sex-discrimination case was reduced to $389,877 on Thursday by a federal judge.
Jennifer McInerney, a former ramp-services supervisor, sued United, claiming she was fired for complaining of sex discrimination. She won her case in April.
U.S. Senior District Court Judge Richard P. Matsch reduced the amount because under the law, the award is capped. A hearing to determine awarding legal fees to McInerney’s attorney is still pending, and United is expected to appeal the case.
In May 2005, McInerney became pregnant and asked for alternative jobs because she anticipated complications with her pregnancy.
