Gov. Bill Ritter said Thursday that the federal government should not select a waste storage site south of Grand Junction as the location to ship thousands of tons of mercury.
The governor, a Democrat, said he will outline his concerns about the proposal to the U.S. Department of Energy in a letter.
“Colorado’s Western Slope is no place for the federal government to deposit thousands of tons of mercury,” Ritter said in a statement.
The Grand Junction Disposal Site in Mesa County, which stores uranium mill tailings, is one of seven sites the energy department is considering for mercury storage. Other sites are in Idaho, Missouri, Nevada, South Carolina, Texas and Washington.
