DETROIT — Auto dealers said they were seeing a surge in showroom traffic and an uptick in sales Friday as a result of the U.S. federal government’s “cash for clunkers” program.
But the program — in which consumers can earn up to $4,500 in cash when they trade in an older vehicle or buy a more fuel-efficient model from a participating dealer — has run into a hitch as some dealers have found they were unable to register for the rebates on the website the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had set up.
Said an NHTSA official: “The system hasn’t crashed. We’re simply dealing with a computer system that’s at capacity.”
