At last, Carlos Gonzalez might be getting into the swing of things. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Gonzalez fouled off eight pitches during a 12-pitch at-bat before hitting a triple on a slider by Giants righty Bob Howry. “I think that’s the best at-bat he’s had since he’s been here,” manager Jim Tracy said. Gonzalez, who went 1-for-4, scored on a sacrifice fly by Yorvit Torrealba.
Lord of the sac flies.
The Rockies are generating offense even when they aren’t belting big hits and home runs. In Sunday’s game, they hit two sacrifice flies, bringing their season total to 42, best in the majors. That total is four more than the team had in the 2008 season. Troy Tulo- witzki, who drove in Seth Smith with a high fly to center in the third, leads the team with eight.
Rookie ball.
The Rockies have won 10 consecutive games when the opposition starts a rookie pitcher. Tracy chalked it up to the idea that “we make them pitch.”
