EDMONTON, Alberta — Will Power led from the pole and won under a caution flag at the Rexall Edmonton Indy on Sunday in a race marred by a pit fire that burned Tony Kanaan‘s hands and face.
It was the first IndyCar series win for the 28-year-old from Australia, in his first season with Penske Racing. Power finished 1.094 seconds ahead of teammate Helio Castroneves. Target Chip Ganassi driver Scott Dixon was third, 1.321 seconds off the pace, but reclaimed first place in the overall IndyCar driver points race.
Kanaan was injured on his first pit stop on the 34th lap when the ethanol fuel hose failed to shut off properly, showering him and his car in fuel.
• Antron Brown completed a sweep of the NHRA’s Western swing, racing to a top fuel victory at the Fram-Autolite NHRA Nationals in Sonoma, Calif.
Tim Wilkerson (funny car), Jason Line (pro stock) and Andrew Hines (pro stock motorcycle) won their respective categories.
• Lewis Hamilton won a Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest that was overshadowed by the absence of Felipe Massa, who remained sedated in a hospital with multiple skull fractures after a crash during qualifying Saturday.
Boxer Forrest shot to death
ATLANTA — Vernon Forrest, a former three-time champion who gained stardom when he became the first boxer to defeat Shane Mosley, was shot to death during an apparent robbery in Atlanta.
Police said Forrest, 38, was shot several times in the back Saturday night and that there are no suspects.
Forrest was an IBF welterweight and two-time WBC junior middleweight champion with a 41-3 career record and 29 knockouts.
Ginepri defeats Querrey
INDIANAPOLIS — Robby Ginepri, No. 95 in the ATP rankings, won his third career singles title by upsetting No. 3 seed and fellow American Sam Querrey 6-2, 6-4 in the final of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships.
• Nikolay Davydenko won his first title of the year, beating Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 6-2 in the German Open final in Hamburg.
• Top-ranked Dinara Safina won her 12th WTA tournament, rallying to beat defending champion Sara Errani 6-7 (5), 6-1, 7-5 at the Slovenia Open in Portoroz.
Taurasi fuels Mercury
NEW YORK — Diana Taurasi had 34 points and 13 rebounds in her first game back after being suspended on drunken-driving charges, lifting the Phoenix Mercury to a 94-88 victory over the New York Liberty.
• Crystal Langhorne scored 19 points and Lindsey Harding added 16 to lead the Washington Mystics to an 87-73 victory over the visiting Sacramento Monarchs.
Phelps makes a splash
ROME — At his first major meet since a historic Olympics, Michael Phelps got off to a good start Sunday at the world championships as part of the U.S. 400-meter freestyle relay team’s gold-medal effort.
Meanwhile, six world records were set on the meet’s first day — including Germany’s Paul Biedermann in the 400 freestyle (3:40.07).
